Play chess online at FICS, the world's oldest chess server. Play the Pulsar Engine online or offline with standard chess and variants like Chess960, and utilize the Explorer with an opening tree book based on analysis from over 345,000 over-the-board games. The Explorer feature works seamlessly offline as well. In-app help is available for users.

For online play, users without an account can participate by simply clicking on the "Connect as Guest" button to enjoy unrated games. FICS accounts are free for a lifetime. The Diamond version also supports Dark Mode and is ad-free.

The On-Board program offers various difficulty levels for players, both online and offline, covering standard chess, Chess960, and other exciting variants like Crazyhouse, Losers, and Atomic.

The Explorer Tab can be used both offline and online with some limitations during play. It presents an Opening Tree based on an extensive database of over 345,000 games where both players are rated above 2300. Users can toggle the move table view to show analysis as well as load PGN games, including player log files. The app provides access to 10 PGN game collections such as Morphy 1858, Fischer’s best games, Capablanca and Kasparov collections, among others - spanning classical to modern games viewable with the opening book and analysis tools.

Guests are welcome to play unrated games on FICS and observe ongoing matches. FICS stands as the original Free Internet Chess Server; a sign-up link is conveniently provided in the console for guests seeking rated gameplay or chat features. Both guests and members can utilize the Training tab under the Find a Game Board Option.

Diamond edition users have access to engine analysis with a single click while observing or examining games. The "Load PGN" feature includes prestigious grandmaster game collections that can be opened on the FICS board as well as within the Explorer tool. Diamond saves all played games and allows for multiple games to be open simultaneously with navigation options through next and previous buttons.

Diamond Chess encompasses various chess variants available on the server such as Chess960, wild fr (a form of shuffle chess specific to FICS), Crazyhouse, Losers, Atomic, Giveaway, or Suicide. Guests have access to all unrated game types.

Noteworthy is Diamond Chess's accessible board designed for visually impaired users with Voice Over functionality. When enabled, Voice Over will audibly indicate the contents of tapped squares like "e4 empty" or "e4 white pawn," along with providing move narration options.

FICS members can interact by joining channels and chatting with fellow players in Diamond's Main View by simply selecting the Channels button. Additionally, in Shouts on FICS, users will encounter blikII - an AI bot that engages in conversations; his last known response being "blikII(TD) shouts: I appoint you ambassador to Fantasy Island!!!" In-app help within this area offers further guidance on efficient chat channel interaction.
